SPECIAL SESSION BREAKOUT: First Generation Students And The Hidden Curriculum

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

A significant percentage of George Mason’s undergraduate student population are the first in their families to attend college. This talented group of students arrive on our campus and campuses across the country without the knowledge (or with incorrect information) about the college going process. This is seen most clearly in the classroom. During this session, members of the First Gen Working Group will discuss elements of this hidden curriculum, and the impact that this has on both the student and faculty member. In addition, we will discuss the small changes that can be made in the classroom to support students who don’t have this “common knowledge”. We will also discuss additional ways to support a more inclusive and supportive classroom for all students.

Facilitators: Tiara Smith, Malerie Gamblin, Khaseem Davis, and Vanessa Correa
